Town of Newstead receives 5 million in federal funding for community center

Congressman Nick Langworthy, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand recently announced $5,000,000 in federal Community Project Funding for the Town of Newstead to construct a new, state-of-the-art Community Center that will serve residents of all ages and strengthen the town’s long-term quality of life, accessibility, and emergency preparedness.  The funding was included as part of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Consolidated Appropriations bill signed into law last week.

Extreme Cold warning issued

Dan Kowalik, Emergency Manager, Town of Newstead/Village of Akron, has asked that the following Advisories be shared with local residents. Light to moderate snow will overspread the region today, February 6. having the potential for snow squalls tonight. Lake effect snow will develop Saturday south of Lake Ontario and linger into Sunday. Additionally, frigid air and gusty winds will arrive tonight and last into Saturday, with the cold air to linger throughout the weekend. Bugle Holiday Deadlines announced

Town of Newstead has one contested race in the current election

Town of Newstead voters have several seats to fill in the current election with early voting underway at various locations including the lower level of the Akron Village Hall, Main Street and your designated polling place on election day, November 4, 2025, however, only one is contested.  Two candidates are seeking the position of Town of Newstead Highway Superintendent, incumbent Michael Bassennello and Gary Baehr, a veteran member of the Town Highway Department.

Akron Chambers sponsors Scarecrow contest

This Halloween season, the Akron Chamber of Commerce. with the support of village merchants, plans to “spook up” the Main Street business district by sponsoring a scarecrow contest.  Walking down Main Street this month you can see many different scarecrow types all designed and put up by various area businesses.  Those not located on Main Street are also invited to set up a scarecrow on Main Street.  Some scarecrows already in place include a pirate skeleton (pictured left), Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (pictured right), and the headless horseman (pictured middle).  All of these scarecrows will be put up from

Classic Broadway featured

Akron Community Band will feature Classic Broadway on July 11 as they present their third of eight concerts in the Russell Park gazebo, Main Street, Akron. The concert begins at 8 p.m. under the direction of Holly Meides and Karlyn Backus, with a variety of “band favorite’ selections.
