Elementary Choir to perform Saturday at Tree Lighting

The Community is invited to attend the Community Christmas Tree Lighting, now scheduled for Saturday, December 18, 2021, in the Gazebo in Russell Park.  Akron Elementary Choir, under the direction of Kim Stachowski,  will offer festive holiday songs in the Gazebo at 3:30 p.m.   Deputy Mayor Darrin Folger and wife Lynn Folger will light the tree with help from Santa and Mrs. Claus as well as Superintendent of Akron Central Schools Patrick McCabe, at 4 p.m. There will not be a Light up Akron parade this year. Main Street businesses open until 8.

‘Light Up Akron’ Indoor activities stay on schedule

Some activities are continuing as planned today, December 11, despite cancellation of much of “Light of Akron” due to a forecast of potentially dangerous winds. Updates from the Akron Chamber of Commerce indicate that Akron First United Methodist Church will still hold their cookie sale Saturday morning as well as their drive-through spaghetti dinner and basket raffle. The Chamber also reports that Akron Merchants have decided they want to continue with Moonlight Shopping. They will be open until 8 p.m. Saturday evening. The Village of Akron Public Safety Team has cancelled all “Light up Akron” activities planned December 11, 2021 due to the anticipated damaging high wind event forecasted to impact our area on Saturday. Confirmed COVID cases continue to climb in 14001

Erie County data on Wednesday, December 8 shows the number of confirmed new COVID-19 cases in the 14001 zip code continues to climb.  There was an increase of 64 cases over the past week, the highest in a one-week period since March of 2020.  There were 40 new cases the previous week, following a week with 35 new cases.  The community total is now and a community total of 1160 since March of 2020.
