Nicholas T. Schmitz
Nicholas T. Schmitz, age 87, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Nicholas will be remembered for his strength, kindness, sense of humor, and the deep love he had for his family.
Born in Dunkirk, New York, on October 27, 1938, to the late Esther L. (Maidel) Schmitz and Theodore J. Schmitz, Nicholas lived a life centered around the people he loved most. He found great joy in spending time with his family, creating memories that will be cherished forever. Whether gathered around the table sharing stories and laughter or enjoying quiet moments together, family was always at the heart of his life.
Nicholas also had a lifelong love of fishing. Some of his happiest moments were spent near the water, enjoying the peace it brought and the simple joy of casting a line. His love for the outdoors and the time he shared with family and friends while fishing created memories that will live on for generations.
He was the loving father of Amy (David) Neveaux, Jason Schmitz, Nicholas II (Rachel) Schmitz, Tina (Bruce) Sallee, and Kathleen Schmitz; cherished grandfather of Ethan Schmitz; dear brother of Ted Schmitz, Ann Monroe, and Joan Crino Rickel. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Nicholas leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering devotion to his family. Though his presence will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the love he gave so freely will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held this summer and announced at a later date.
“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.”
