Patricia J. Damon

Patricia J. Damon entered the gates of heaven on July 27, 2023, not, she would say, because she was so wonderful, but because she had accepted the free gift of salvation Jesus paid for when He died on the cross and rose again. Along with her best friend Fran Blake, Pat asked Jesus to be her Savior on May 8, when they were both 14. Pat recently celebrated the 75th anniversary of that eternity-changing event with Fran in a lengthy, laughter-filled, long-distance call of reminiscence.

Patricia liked to be called Pat, but she was most commonly referred to as Mrs. Damon by the hundreds of children (many of whom have long-since become adults) who had listened to her teach Bible truths in Sunday School and children’s church. Faith in Jesus Christ was Mrs. Damon’s focus, and she shared that with all who were blessed to know her. She kept those many children paying attention with a firm demeanor, an amazingly-effective fingersnap, a refusal to make God’s Word boring (Bible baseball and flannelgraph figures were regularly featured), and an obvious love for each one of her students. Many have returned to tell her how much she and her Bible lessons meant to them.

Pat’s life was a daily testimony to her love of the Lord Jesus Christ. A faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church of Akron, she attended every service she could, both while her husband pastored there and again after his passing. She faithfully read her Bible and was a true prayer warrior. Many friends and acquaintances shared a need with her, knowing she would “take it to the Lord in prayer” regularly and repeatedly until the Lord gave a solution.

After moving with her late husband into the Akron Mobile Home Park, Mrs. Damon became the honorary prayer warrior of the park. She joined the homeowners’ association, too, and championed the rights of mobile homeowners by writing letters alerting politicians about needed legislation. Some of them felt like they knew her after a few years of such correspondence, and they read her letters personally.

Pat always said her hobbies were reading, eating, and talking. Her favorite place was Tri-State Bible Camp, where she enjoyed all three along with the great preaching and sweet hymn-singing. She sat on the porch the first day to greet everyone as they arrived. Her hugs were legendary. Pat’s welcoming presence made even new people feel included and already loved.

Born on July 2, 1933 to the late Roger and Edna (Hesseltine) Randall, Patricia was the devoted wife of the late Albert Damon, with whom she shared almost sixty years of marriage. The loving mother of six children: Peter Damon, Ruth Spencer, Martha (Anthony) Risitano, Matthew (Sabine) Damon, Joanna (Scott) Vanderkooi, and Paul Damon, she was also the beloved grandmother of nine amazing grandchildren and 12 precious great-grandchildren. Pat is also survived by nieces, nephews, and some lovely people she unofficially “adopted” into her family.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Friday, August 4, 2023, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Ross Funeral Home of Akron, 10 Eckerson Avenue, Akron, NY, 14001.
