Section VI Schools set to begin some Winter Sports

The Section VI Executive Committee met on January 12 and re-confirmed their support to move forward with low and moderate risk sports starting Monday.

Based on sport classifications set forth by the New York State Department of Health, schools in Section VI may begin practicing and competing in bowling, swimming, rifle and downhill skiing. “We are excited to begin the winter season for the five low to moderate risk sports, “Section President, Brett Banker said. “We are very excited for our athletes, coaches and families. Athletes across our region will be able to return to something that is so important to them”.

High Risk sports such as basketball, cheerleading, hockey and wrestling remain on pause until further direction from Governor Cuomo’s Office. In an earlier decision, Section VI canceled Indoor Track for the season.

“We welcome and are ready to begin High Risk sports as soon as we receive approval from Albany,” Banker continued. “Members of the Executive Committee are confident that member schools, athletic directors, coaches and athletic trainers can provide the same safe and nurturing experiences that we did in the highly successful fall season.” Out of support for local health officials and school leaders, the Executive Committee also voted that no spectators would be allowed at contests in bowling, swimming, and rifle this season, until further notice.
