ACS Community Education courses announced

Akron-Newstead Community Education has announced the Winter/Spring Semester course offerings set to begin in January. Included is use of the ACS Fitness Center, Hall Walking and a 5-hour Pre-licensing Course. The programs run from January 10, 2011 through June 17, 2011.

Akron elementary jumps to raise money for Heart Association

For nine years the Akron Elementary School has participated in the American Heart Associationís "Jump Rope for Heart" campaign designed to educate students about maintaining healthy hearts by exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy lifestyle while raising money for the organizationís mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Akron students in grades three, four and five helped to raise $2,815.70 during this yearís campaign.


Akron elementary students help others

Akron elementary students in Mrs. Best's class kept a tally of the number of food items that were collected by grade level for the December food drive to benefit the Akron-Newstead Food Pantry.


Akron set to begin Scholastic Bowl Competition

The Scholastic Bowl Competition for 2011 begins on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Genesee Community College. There are twelve competing teams in the league from area high schools including Akron, Pembroke, Alexander, Oakfield, Attica, Alden, Notre Dame, Le Roy, Byron-Bergen, Elba, Batavia and Pavilion. Akronís team has been coached for over thirty years by Akron Central School math teacher, Mrs. Mary Borden.


Board of Education recognizes Akron students for numerous accomplishments

Several Akron students were recognized during the December 15 Akron Central School Board of Education meeting. Joseph Caprio, Athletic Director, shared accomplishments of the girls and boys soccer teams, as well as the cross county and field hockey teams with the Board. Mark Flynn acknowledged Nina Komosinskiís selection to the Al-Eastern Wind Ensemble. Nina is only the second Akron student to achieve this national level honor, the first was Lori Bordonaro Mozee.

Instructional calendar changes made at ACS

The Akron Central School Board of Education approved a revised instructional calendar for the current school year, adding two half-day Superintendentís Conference Days during their December 15 meeting.


New Yearís Eve Ball Drop planned in Russell Park

The Akron Celebration Committee is holding their annual New Yearís Eve Ball Drop in Russell Park on December 31 beginning at 11:30 p.m. All are invited to gather in Russell Park and on Main Street to see friends and neighbors, drink hot chocolate, experience a beautiful fireworks display and watch the ball drop as 2010 ends and 2011 begins.


Newstead Fire Company installs new officers

Newstead Fire Company, Inc. installed new officers during their 63rd Annual Installation Banquet on Saturday, December 4, 2010.


Time remains to help food pantry and share Holiday greetings

Holiday greetings can still be sent through the Akron Lions Club ďIn Lieu of Christmas CardsĒ fundraiser which benefit the Akron-Newstead Food Pantry again this year. The Club invites all to consider donating the money, usually spent on purchasing and mailing Christmas Cards to neighbors and friends, to the Akron Lions Club for a community service project.
