Akron Central School Tennis players Carlton Carter and Yggor Zignago finished second in the Niagara-Orleans League doubles championship losing a 7-6, 7-5 match against Wilson.

Arrest made following incident with three-year -old

An arrest was made Saturday, June 11 following an incident on Buell Street in which a three-year-old child was picked up by an unauthorized person. Chief Richard Lauricella of the Akron Police Department reports that about 1:00 p.m. a Native American male about 49 years old was walking down the sidewalk on Buell St. and picked up a 3-year-old boy off the front lawn of an unrelated citizen.

Lady Tiger Tracksters compete at Sectionals

Several members of the Akron Lady Tigers track team headed to Strider Field in Jamestown to compete in the Section VI State Qualifier meet on Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4. Due to previous performances, eight members of the Lady Tigers track team were able to compete in the meet.

Reading intervention program making a difference at Akron Elementary

The Elementary reading intervention program at Akron Central Elementary School is making a positive difference for students according to a report presented to Board of Education members on June 8. Also part of that Board of Education meeting was a discussion on Global connect usage, donations to reinstate extra-curricular activities/sports, awards, tax cap, appointment of a new English teacher and elimination of several positions due to cuts in the 2011-2012 budget, and extra-curricular appointments.

Town of Newstead accepting online payments

The Town of Newstead is now accepting online payments for permits and taxes. Newstead Town Clerk Dawn Izydorczak told Board members at a recent meeting that the online payment option is up and running and there are two links on the Town website, one for permits and the second for taxes. The links are located in the upper portion of the box on the right of the home page.
