Independence Day Celebration rides draw enthisastic crowd

Despite forecasted showers, Akron’s annual Fourth of July celebration embraced sunny skies Tuesday and Wednesday as residents enjoyed many activities.

Akron Bugle official ACS newspaper for thirtieth year

The AKRON BUGLE was designated as the official newspaper for the Akron Central School District during the Board of Education’s reorganization meeting on Monday, July 2. It is the thirtieth year the Akron Bugle will serve as official newspaper for the District. As such it carries all official notices regarding meetings, actions, and public hearings. Coverage of Board meetings, activities and programs at ACS, and school sports is part of the mission of the Bugle to keep readers informed about everything in the Akron/Newstead area and is not tied to the “official” status.

Last call issued for summer recreation

The deadline to register and submit immunization records for the Town of Newstead 2012 Summer Recreation Programs is today. The programs will run Monday through August 17.

Akron Tigers Babe Ruth team on hot streak

After a two wins and two losses start to the season, the Akron Tigers Babe Ruth team looked to heat things up and build off their last win against the Alden Phillies.

Caprio and entire BOE bid farewell to Ford, Brege

ACS School Board President Daniel Caprio said thank you to Interim Superintendent of Schools Dennis Ford and Trustee Jody Brege at the regular business meeting June 27. Both Brege and Ford’s terms expired last Saturday.

Dorr crosses finish line short of London

Akron alumna Fawn Dorr fell short of this year’s Olympic dreams after placing second in the 400-meter hurdles in the Canadian track and field trials last Saturday in Calgary. Dorr needed to win the final race to travel with the Canadian team to the summer games in London.

Marilyn's Musings: a labor of love

As this issue goes to press, Ken and I begin our 32nd year of serving this community as publishers of the AKRON BUGLE.

Only 45 minutes or so from Akron…

Those looking for activities and entertainment this summer may find some of the listings below helpful. All are possible in a day trip, some only a short distance, and a great way to spend a few hours.

Senior Citizen News

Floral Craft classes, and the crocheting and knitting groups, are taking a break for the summer. All will be back in September. Crocheting resumes on Monday, September 10 at 10 a.m. Those with questions should call Mary at 908-5588. Knitting will resume on Friday, September 7 at 10 a.m. New members are welcome to join at that time. September 10 for the Crochet group and September 7 for the knitting group.

Summer athletic conditioning program available for students

Student athletes participating in JV or Varsity athletics at Akron Central Schools are invited to participate in the summer athletic conditioning program. The program, facilitated by ACS teachers and coaches Mrs. Mary Borden, Mr. Andrew Clouse and Mr. Justin Gerstung, began on Monday, July 2 and runs through Friday, August 10.

Summer Mid-Day Concert Series starts July 12

Music fills Russell Park during the lunch hour once again as the Summer Mid-Day Concert Series starts next Thursday. The concerts run for four weeks from 12 to 1 p.m. each Thursday afternoon. Laurie Bordonaro-Mozée organized the series. Area businesses sponsor different musicians and dates. The following groups will perform in Russell Park during Thursday lunchtimes.
