Town of Newstead receives 5 million in federal funding for community center

Congressman Nick Langworthy, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand recently announced $5,000,000 in federal Community Project Funding for the Town of Newstead to construct a new, state-of-the-art Community Center that will serve residents of all ages and strengthen the town’s long-term quality of life, accessibility, and emergency preparedness.  The funding was included as part of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Consolidated Appropriations bill signed into law last week.

Scouts serve up chicken barbecue regardless of the weather

It may be too cold for many of us to consider barbecue this Sunday before the big game, but Akron Boy Scout Troop 559 will be serving chicken off the grill beginning at 11 a.m. in the Russell Park refreshment stand regardless of the air temperature outside. Village water customers encouraged to let their water drip

A Code Red was issued to Village of Akron water customers on Friday afternoon encouraging them to let their water drip during the extreme cold conditions. “Due to the depth of the frost in the ground and the predicted low temperatures anticipated for the weekend, the village advises residents to allow faucets to drip overnight to keep your water service from freezing. Thank you,” the alert advises. Dan Kowalik, Emergency Manager, Town of Newstead/Village of Akron, has asked that the following Advisories be shared with local residents. Light to moderate snow will overspread the region today, February 6. having the potential for snow squalls tonight. Lake effect snow will develop Saturday south of Lake Ontario and linger into Sunday. Additionally, frigid air and gusty winds will arrive tonight and last into Saturday, with the cold air to linger throughout the weekend. Discoloration of Village of Akron water possible

Due to the ongoing severe cold temperatures, there has been a water main break within the Village of Akron water system. The Village Public Works Department has located the break and are working towards a solution. The break has created turbulence in the lines causing the occurrence of temporarily discolored water due to sediment in the pipes. There is not a boil notice in place at this time. The Village thanks residents for their patience.

The Akron Central School District has announced dates for Kindergarten Registration for the 2026-2027 school year. Parents of children born between December 2, 2020 and December 1, 2021 are reminded that it is time to register their child for kindergarten. Due to expected winter storm conditions, a Travel Advisory will be in place for all of Erie County starting at 10 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2026. A multi-day winter weather storm with strong winds, heavy snowfall and dangerously cold temperatures will affect Western New York starting Monday, January 19.
