Storm update for Village of Akron and Town of Newstead

Emergency Manager for the Town of Newstead and Village of Akron, Dan Kowalik reports that as of 11:30 a.m. Electric Power was still on in the Village of Akron and the Town of Newstead had 190 customers without power as of 11:00 a.m. Pixley’s ShurFine is closing at noon today, December 23 and will be closed tomorrow as well. Both Akron and Newstead Fire Companies have standby crews in their respected halls.  Snow is blinding in the area.  Updates from both highway departments will be shared as available. Both the Town and Village have a travel ban in place.

Akron Central School closed on Friday, December 23

Akron Central School Superintendent of Schools Patrick D. McCabe announced this morning that due to forecasted extreme weather conditions, the Akron Central School District will be closed, including all afterschool activities, on Friday, December 23, 2022.  “We understand that the decision to close schools has a big effect on all members of our school community. It is our hope that early notification allows families additional time to make the necessary arrangements for work and childcare,” McCabe said. “We wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday season.”

Return of cannon wheel hub requested

There will be no questions asked if the wheel hub stolen from the historic cannon in Russell Park is returned to the Akron Police Department. The hand forged hub is important to the integrity of the cannon and of no use to the person or persons who stole it, Akron Police Chief Rick Lauricella noted. “We appreciate it’s immediate return,” Lauricella said.
