Akron Central School Superintendent of Schools Patrick D. McCabe announced this morning that due to forecasted extreme weather conditions, the Akron Central School District will be closed, including all afterschool activities, on Friday, December 23, 2022. “We understand that the decision to close schools has a big effect on all members of our school community. It is our hope that early notification allows families additional time to make the necessary arrangements for work and childcare,” McCabe said. “We wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday season.”

Village of Akron residents are reminded there is no overnight parking on Village Streets during winter months. Vehicles parked on the roadways or in parking spots not allocated by village permits make snow removal difficult and at times dangerous.

Modern Disposal, servicing the Town of Newstead and Village of Akron just announced that pick-up is cancelled Friday, December 23 in light of weather reports of high winds. A double refuse/recycling collection is planned for Friday, December 30 at the regular time. Previously they had said it would be picked up early tomorrow.

There will be no questions asked if the wheel hub stolen from the historic cannon in Russell Park is returned to the Akron Police Department. The hand forged hub is important to the integrity of the cannon and of no use to the person or persons who stole it, Akron Police Chief Rick Lauricella noted. “We appreciate it’s immediate return,” Lauricella said.

The Wreaths and garland welcome those coming in to check on the unique shops already decked out in holiday attire with many gift ideas for everyone on your list. Shops are already welcoming patrons looking to get an early start on their shopping far away from the crowds. Businesses are also preparing for “Light Up Akron,” on December 10 when Santa will be in town as music, a parade, good food, holiday lights, and great shopping are all on the schedule.
