The weekly COVID-19 Akron/Newstead Public Safety Team reports to Town of Newstead and Village of Akron Emergency Services Coordinator Dan Kowalik announced the Town of Newstead’s highway department return to a full-time work schedule on Monday, April 27. The department is working 4 ten-hour days (Monday through Thursday). Daily temperature monitoring and other COVID-19 protocols are in place.

Area fire companies are facing resident concerns over first responders wearing masks to calls. Some residents are breaching the social distancing guidelines at emergency scenes to express their apprehension and fear over the meaning of the safety precautions in place, jeopardizing their safety and the safety of first responders.

Akron Fire Company has organized a special ride for the Easter Bunny. They will have a full company parade through the Village of Akron with most of their apparatus on Easter Sunday beginning at 12:00 noon. The company is NOT handing out candy. They ask that you stay on your porches or in your yards and please make sure you are practicing social distancing when you see the parade. The McGuire Group, operator of Western New York’s leading skilled nursing facilities, is donating 1,000 N95 respirator masks to area first responders. The Western New York health care provider has been actively procuring personal protective equipment for its employees and has procured an additional 1,000 N95 masks for WNY’s first responders.
