Food, Music, and Fireworks on tap July 3 Activities and Parades on July 4

Akron Community Band will present their Friday night concert in Veterans Park, Buell Street, Akron beginning at 7 p.m. on July 3.  They will share several patriotic pieces prior to the Akron Celebration Committee Fireworks.  Food Vendors will serve a variety of items in Veterans Park from 5 to 9 p.m.   Fireworks begin after dusk.

All are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

“America 250”

“America 250” is the theme for this year’s Akron Celebration Committee Fourth of July Kiddie and Gala parade. Businesses, organizations and youth groups are invited to participate in the gala parade.  Businesses can compete for the trophy in the “Best Business float category”, Community organizations and individuals can compete for first, second, or third monetary awards. Entries are encouraged to capture the parade theme.

Those wanting to participate can still do so.  Pre-register online at the Celebration website: www.celebrateakron.org or email akroncelebration@gmail.com or Just come to Bloomingdale Ave in front of the school at 3:30 p.m. on July 4.

Fourth of July

July 4th activities begin at 9 a.m. with the Newstead Historical Society Annual Pie Sale and Quilt Raffle at 9 a.m. in the front lawn of the Knight Sutton Museum on Main Street.  The Museum will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Festivities in and around Russell Park begin at 10:00 a.m. with the Power Wheels race.  The race is held on Main Street, Akron between Church St. and Clinton St.   Power wheels races begin at 10 a.m. followed by the first Soap Box Derby race at 11 a.m. in the same location.

Friends of the Limerick and Newstead Public Library will hold a Chicken Barbecue beginning at 11 a.mFood Vendors will offer various menus beginning at 11 a.m., as well. Kids activities are planned in Russell Park from 11-3; Face Painting by Market on Main from 11:00 to 2:00 p.m.; Meet & Greet Wonder Woman 11:30-1:30; Mr. No the Balloon Guy! Will be in Russell Park from 12 noon until 2 p.m.

The Pink Cow Ice Cream Contest begins at 12:30 p.m. (arrive 10 to 15 mins early); 1-3:00 Smoke Dancers in the Gazebo; Rich-Twinn Octagon House Tours are planned 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.;

Kiddie Parade “America 250” starts at Hart St at 4:15 p.m. No pre-registration needed. Participant gift while supplies last; The Declaration of Independence will be read on Main Street at 4:25 p.m.  Gala Parade “America 250” participants stage at ACS (Bloomingdale Rd) at 3:30 p.m. with the parade scheduled to step off at 4:30 p.m.; Craig Wilkins performs in the Russell Park Gazebo beginning at 6 p.m. followed by Right as Rain.  Lawn chairs suggested.

July Fifth

Newstead Historical Society continues the Celebrate America 250 on July 5 with an invitation to all to join them at Maple Lawn Cemetery (John Street across from Russell Park)  at 12:30 p.m.  for a dedication at Revolutionary War Veterans’ grave sites.

That will be followed by a special event at the Rich-Twinn Octagon House – Heritage Day – from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.  Family activities and demonstrations, including spinning, Open-hearth cooking, quilling, croquet, children’s games, blacksmith, Hit and Miss Engine, Tonawanda Senecas, and more.  The Main Floor of the Octagon House will be open for a walk through from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Food Vendors expected on July 3 in Veterans Park include: The Pink Cow Ice Cream Shop, Newstead Exempts, Papa’s Popcorn, BABZ BBQ, K’s Fun Food, Sip Society, Cheesy Chick, Munch House.

Food Vendors expected on July 4 in Russell Park area are Pink Cow, Newstead Exempts, Papa’s Popcorn, Chiavetta’s BBQ, Limerick and Newstead Library, Indian Tacos, K’s Fun Food.

Schedule of events and vendors are subject to change.  Volunteers and donations are always welcome.
