Town of Newstead Highway resumes full work schedule under COVID-19 guidelines

The weekly COVID-19 Akron/Newstead Public Safety Team reports to Town of Newstead and Village of Akron Emergency Services Coordinator Dan Kowalik announced the Town of Newstead’s highway department return to a full-time work schedule on Monday, April 27.  The department is working 4 ten-hour days (Monday through Thursday).  Daily temperature monitoring and other COVID-19 protocols are in place.

Thomas “Coach” Wetzen

Thomas Wetzen by Marilyn J. Kasperek Condolences and memories began flooding social media as news of the death, of retired Akron Central School Physical Education teacher, Athletic Director, and Coach Thomas Wetzen, on Saturday, April 25, 2020 began to spread. Wetzen, 92, who entered into rest at Buffalo VA Medical Center, contracted Covid-19 while in a nursing home and had been hospitalized for about 2 weeks. Hideko Kenyon

Hideko Kenyon passed away peacefully on April 21, 2020. She was born and raised in Okinawa, Japan. Her given name was Hideko and she later took the nickname Hide. Okinawa is where she would meet and marry her sweetheart, Walter H. Kenyon while he was stationed there before moving to America. They had three children: Kevin (Carolyn) Kenyon, Kani (Rene) Tucciarone, and Kathy (Greg) Pequeen. She loved her family dearly. She is predeceased by her beloved Walter (2002) and her dear daughter, Kani. Hide spent her early days providing child care for the neighborhood kids. Her love for children never wavered

Erie County receives Federal Coronavirus stimulus funds, cannot be used to offset lost sales tax revenue, state aid

Erie County Comptroller Stefan I. Mychajliw Jr. has confirmed that Erie County government received anticipated funding from the federal government totaling $160,306,414.50 to assist with COVID-19 related expenses.  The revenue was direct deposited by the Federal Government into Erie County’s Trust Account on April 24, 2020.  The money is the result of the CARES Act stimulus package passed by federal lawmakers and signed by President Trump. The legislation provides financial assistance to local governments combating the Coronavirus.

EC Office for People with Disabilities joins Senior Services, community partners in new effort ERIE COUNTY, NY— Recently the Erie County Department of Senior Services, in conjunction with the Erie County Office for People with Disabilities, announced a partnership with Hearts and Hands: Faith in Action, the IDEA Center at the University at Buffalo, Wegmans and others to assist with transportation, deliveries, and social connection needs for seniors and the disabled.  The Health Foundation for Western and Central New York, Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (“NFTA”) and AARP also support the effort to create opportunities for volunteers to connect older adults
